I am not opposed to using a canned or envelope seasoning version of Sloppy Joes…but once you try this recipe, you will never use anything but this again! AND, vegetarians can enjoy this as well by simply using the pre-made frozen meatless crumbles by Morningstar Farms or Boca. Enjoy!
Saucy but still stays on the bun. Delish!! ![]()
3/4 c. chopped onion
2 tsp. olive oil
3/4 lb. ground round
OR
1 bag Boca or Morningstar Farm meatless crumbles
2 c. organic tomato sauce
2 Tbsp. organic tomato paste
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. Montreal steak seasoning (veggie friendly, contains no meat)
1/4-1/2 tsp. Sriracha chile sauce (a little goes a very long way)
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/2 tsp. Kosher salt
1/2 tsp. granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
12 Hamburger buns
–(I use hot dog buns for the kids…the filling stays in better)
Brown ground round, drain grease. Set aside. {If using meatless crumbles, no need to brown}.
Heat oil in large skillet, add chopped onion. Saute until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add remaining ingredients (if using meatless crumbles, add at this step).
Stir to combine well.
Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.
Place on buns and add any condiments desired.

Yummy! These went over well with the meat-eaters. I will try it on the vegetarian next time also. Didn’t have the steak seasoning, but it was still good.
So glad you enjoyed them, Debi!
What is the chili sauce? Is that a brand or a type? This sounds like a good recipe.
Rebecca-I use either any store brand or the Heinz is good, too.
